Autobiography of a Yogi Reprint of the Philosophical library 1946 First Edition Paramhansa Yogananda 9781565892125 Books Reviews

  • I first read this book when I was twenty or so ( I'm now reaching seventy ). immediately after completing the book, I applied for the lessons and continued expanding my spirituality through the meditation and other techniques expounded in the lessons. I then applied for my kriya initiation and became a kriyaban. In all this I saw my life change subtly. My anchor became God, and the ups and downs of normal life no longer worried me. Life became one beautiful magic show; everyday being a new thrilling experience. I am in a state now where I would not trade my present condition for all the money in the world - and it was all started by this book. Yogananda used to say that this book wil be his ambassador after he is gone - and how true that has become.
Spiritual classics like this book are written at several levels. A person reading this book for the first time, if his consciousness is not advanced , will understand some parts of the book very differently from a person who has been on the spiritual path for awhile and has a greatly expanded consciousness . After my first reading of this book, I did not read it anymore, as I was busy with the lessons and meditation. Just last week, I took out my old battered copy of the Autobiography and flipped through its pages, stopping every now and then to read some passage. I found that I could understand each of these passages at their deepest level. As predicted by many, this book will bring about a spiritual revolution to our world, when people will finally concentrate on the spiritual essence of a religion rather than the insignificant details of the various religions that tend to separate man from man.
  • It's hard to give this book less than 5 stars because I highly recommend it and it can completely change your life. I originally read the version with the blue cover which I found out later is apparently the one that wasn't edited after Yogananda's death. Many years later I repurchased this red cover version because it came with the free CD and I figured.. how different can it be? Well, it is very different. The pictures are different. It has more recent pictures of what is apparently the newer leaders of SRF after Yogananda's death. Some of the amazing older pics from the original book were removed which is just heartbreaking for me. I can tell it just isn't the same vibration. I wasn't getting the same feel. So a few days into it, I put the book down and just bit the bullet, got over my penny pinching self, and re-ordered the blue version. I would say, if you are interested more in the SRF organization, buy this one. If you want the more original version that Yogananda himself wrote, get the blue one. The blue version is also free online, I downloaded it, but nothing like having a book in your hands. Especially one that has a healing vibrational quality to it.
  • For anyone interested in spirituality, this is a fantastic book. I admit I was slow to believe in much of what I read in this book, but over the next few years after its purchase, it wound up changing my life beyond measure. I own a great many books on religion and spirituality, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart and in my life. I highly recommend this book; and for the first and only time on , I would give this item more than 5 stars if I could.
  • If you are on a spiritual path and meditation is of interest to you, drop every other book on meditation and read this one. While there are many modern good writers about the topic of meditation, few offer glimpses into states of bliss that are attainable. Yogananda tells us that bliss is achievable by everybody through techniques of concentration. The subjects were rare accounts of Hindu saints met personally by Yogananda. His description of his spiritual journeys, those of his master, his master's master and other Hindu spiritual prodigies will make you see life in a completely different manner. Even though you may not have had these spiritual experiences, to have a thorough account of their lives, their teachings, and their ecstatic experiences, is profound and are rare accounts seldom heard of. There is wisdom in every page. West meets East. Happiness is an inside job; it cannot be found externally. Here is Yogananda's summary of the Bengali "Joy-Permeated Mother" "Casting aside every inferior attachment, Ananda Moyi Ma offers her sole allegiance to the Lord. Not by the hair-splitting distinctions of scholars but by the sure logic of faith, the child-like saint has solved the only problem in human life--establishment of unity with God". Never have my eyes feasted on such beautiful prose about difficult to understand, rare experiences. I feel forever changed by the experience of reading this book, and I consider myself well-read. This book has become my new bible and will guide me forward in life. When Steve Jobs died, he had one book on his ipad, and this was it. George Harrison says without this book he wouldn't want to live. Now I know why.
  • I now understand why clients told me about this book for years and why it remains a best seller. This is one of the best personal accounts I've read from an enlightened soul. It contains wonderful stories of the saints and sages of India, a beautiful account of the progression of Yogananda from human seeker to enlightened soul, and best of all the energy of the beautiful individuals described within can be felt as you read the book with a sincere desire to connect w/the Divine. Loved it. I'm reading it again.
  • This book was life changing for me! I got the version first and then bought the paperback. The best chapter was the one that explains what happens when we are "on the other side". The teachings in this book are not the things that I learned in church growing up, but I believed them even when I was a small child. It is nice to have my ideas confirmed. Paramahansa Yogananda had such an interesting way of writing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is committed to broadening their spiritual horizons.
