Hey Kids! Let Visit a Cruise Ship Fun Facts and Amazing Discoveries For Kids Volume 2 Teresa Mills 9781946049056 Books Reviews

  • My 6 year old is REALLY into cruise ships right now so I am actively looking for books on cruise ships for him. He is mildly autistic and prefers "the real thing" but does love children's stories as well. I thought this book wold be perfect for him; it would show him things about real cruise ships but in a way a child can comprehend. When it arrived I was super disappointed. The book is all black and white. The photos are not the best quality and the content; UGH. Maybe it would be a good book to prepare a child for going on a cruise but the black and white photos leave something to be desired especially when most children's paperbacks are the same price and we're getting full color illustrations. This book talks a little bit about the ship (how it floats, size, the bridge) but mostly what happens on the ship; big screen TV, pools, towel animals, games on the ship, food and shows. I was expecting more on the actual ship; the port process, navigation, the actual workings of the ship and it's crew, more behind the scenes type of stuff with color photos so my son can better understand how a cruise ship operates. Those items the author did touch on like where the crew lives on the ship or where the garbage goes are interesting but they are brief paragraphs and have no photos and because my son is a visual learner; words on a page mean nothing to him. I was expecting a more thorough depiction of cruise ship life and processes and that is not what this book is about.
  • I purchased the version of the book, it has several advantages over the paperback version. First, the images are in color (where you saw the review that paperback version had black and white photos only). Second, the book includes links that take you to the live cams located on the ships, so you can actually see what a large number of cruise ships are doing right now.

Fun Facts about cruise ships introduces kids to cruise ships and I thought it was a good read before our cruise vacation. It has a lot of material about different parts other ship, entertainment on the ship, and many details that made us excited about the trip. It has fun facts about what happens to the garbage and other things like that. The book is aimed at older kids as it requires Wikipedia level comprehension level,
it is likely too advanced for little kids.

  • I am a travel advisor and writer and as such I am always on the lookout for books and other information appropriate for families. When I discovered this book, I was hoping to be able to recommend it for our first-time family cruisers, but unfortunately, I cannot.

The book provides very shallow coverage of the crew and where they live and eat, as well as giving cursory information about pools and waterslides, food, theatrical entertainment, and, oddly enough, how sewage is handled. There is a notable lack of illustrations as well.

The book is geared toward Carnival Cruise Lines so the information is more specific to that cruise line which doesn't necessesarily apply to other cruiseclines.

I would give this book a miss as more complete and interesting details are available for free through travel advisors and the cruise lines themselves.
  • I just returned from my first cruise adventure and had no idea how a cruise ship floating on the ocean really functions behind the scenes.
Honestly, there was no time to even think about how it is possible to have a 'city' gliding on water. So many new impressions keep you busy; so much to do; so much to see; and so much to eat . . . !
I wish I had read Teresa Mills' handy information book beforehand. Don't be misled by the title "Hey Kids . . ." it is a fun, quick reference for everyone, filled with interesting information to stimulate more curiosity.

How many passengers know about why such huge ship is designed the way it is, how they store the food and how much for over 2,000 passengers, the waste management, etc.? Kids LOVE to learn when their parents/grandparents explore and learn with them!

Anyone planning a cruise adventure? I highly recommend to add this book to your planning list and/or take it with you to explore the ship with or without your kids or grandkids. Your fun will be educational as well!
  • This is not about a cruise or what happens on a cruise. I thought this would be more of an introduction explaining the process, ship and things that occurred but not the case at all. The book was not color which was also a big let down.
  • We were very excited to order this book for our grandchildren. We are planning a cruise with them. The book is small which I didn't realize. The . disappointment is the black and white pictures. We were looking for exciting visual since this is geared for children. It is just an OK narrative.
  • This book was purchased for a 7 year old going on her first cruise. She is an avid reader and it made for a good read for her. She had many questions about her upcoming vacation and this helped answer some of them. Of course, she now tries to make her own towel animals every night! Great book and a nice way to introduce cruising as a method of travel!
  • This is based on the Carnival Splendor, which was the ship my son and I went on (our first cruise) last year. This book is very simple, and without color pictures, but has lots of interesting facts for any reader who wants to know more about the ins and outs of a huge cruise ship.
