"This was an interesting read. It took a few chapters to get into it, mostly because the author did such a good job making the main character kinda horrible. She's someone we all can relate to having experienced. The book got very interesting and it wasn't until the end that I started putting the pieces together. I knew mostly how it would play out before I read it, but at least I didn't know in the first ten pages, ya know?

I liked some of the subtle messages, intended or not. It was a nice reminder that people aren't always what they seem and that our view of the world, incidents, and people are always very one-sided--our side. It reminded me that people are complex, despite some people seeming so simple and superficial.

The book was very real feeling, like I kept saying to myself, "I could see that happening to someone". I hate reading books that seem to tie up WAY too neatly or just have magical coincidences that make the story seem unreal or obviously fake. It's an easy way out for an author. I think writing the last 10% of a book must be the hardest part, because too many authors seem to screw it up at the last minute. This tied up in the end, but in a way that actually makes sense. Not rushed, no magic resolution. It seemed very real, well paced, and very fitting. While this wasn't a complex read, it was very well told and I think that's this author's best quality.

I did just buy a copy of this book for a friend who I think would like it, based on other books I knew she reads."

  • Grade A-

Snobby, popular rich Queen Bee Liz wakes up on the morning of her eighteenth birthday to discover she's lying dead in the water, drowned after a night of partying with her best friends. Was her death an accident, or something more sinister? She encounters a former classmate, Alex, who died a year before in an accident. He shows Liz how to revisit her past memories in order to glean insight into the type of person she truly was, underneath the mean-girl exterior, and ultimately to the mystery of how she ended up in the water that night.

I never read books with supernatural premises. I like my fiction contemporary and realistic. The premise to BETWEEN seemed so interesting, and at $1.99 I figured I'd give it a try. I don't remember the last time I was so pleasantly surprised about a novel. I finished the 400+ page novel in one day. Jessica Warman had me hooked from the first page to the last page. Even though a lot of the characters, especially narrator Liz, were unkind, shallow and vapid, most had positive and negative qualities. Liz traveled an emotional journey of insight from narcissistic self indulgence, to generosity and graciousness. Her arc wasn't linear, as in life.

The plot was intriguing and held my interest. Warman gave Liz a great voice, even when Liz was unlikable, and she often was in the beginning of the book, I still routes for her, especially as we learned more about her childhood and how she because a mean girl. I loved that the ending gave closure. I figured out many not the twists early, but that didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.

Themes friendship, sisters, family, drugs & alcohol, rich kids, mean girls, death, afterlife, exploitation, romance, loyalty.
  • Such a mysterious read! This one has a surprise towards the end that you'll never see coming. I love that! Full of questions you'll be eager to uncover, you'll find yourself flying through this one!

It's Elizabeth's birthday party, and her father has allowed her, along with her friends to have a party on their boat. All was well. Great in fact, except that nobody managed to stay up until she actually turned another year older. Apparently everyone drank too much and passed out. Liz can't seem to remember a thing that went on. All she does know is that there is a highly obnoxious thumping noise and everyone seems to be sleeping through it. Trying to rouse someone with no efforts, Liz finally goes to see just where the noise is coming from.

That's when she sees her. The dead body floating in the water bumping against the boat. That person in the water? That's Liz. But how? Suddenly, Liz realizes someone is next to her staring along with her at her dead body. That's where it gets all the more interesting. Because that boy, well he died a year ago in a hit and run accident. With Liz questioning him, Alex decides to explain why she can't wake her friends and that it is indeed her in that cold water.

Not sure as to why Alex hasn't passed over yet, he starts to explain to her what it is that he does know, as well as what they can do. Once everyone wakes up, Liz knows it's only a matter of time before they find her body and that she needs to go see her father before he finds out. And once she is discovered, Liz watches to see how everyone reacts. Alex has told her that it's not good to see all her friends and family in mourning but she doesn't care.

As time goes by, Liz watches everyone to see if there are any clues as to just how she died. Alex says it all comes in time. After all, he was killed by a hit and run driver. He doesn't know who hit him either. Only time will tell. What Liz does find out is that apparently things weren't as they seemed. For instance, her best friend and step-sister wasn't such a friend after all. So many questions left unanswered yet, Liz is determined to know the truth.
    As they say,
the truth will set you free.
    Right?
