The book is a fantastic backflash. I like the fact that it incorporates a lot of political facts, details and perspectives that enabled me to understand better why and how the collapse happened. If the Romanovs were really a family, it seems to me like a bunch of vipers in a basket of snakes. Truly most living in lalaland, still a few really committed to analysis and strategic military and political management of Russia's issues. This Grand Duke really used his formative knowledge and leadership trying to administer and extend the life of the dinasty. Not intending he thought and did well or bad, this character really was a political analyst, strategist and military leader. Have Oleg Romanov survived his fatal wounds he may have been able to ally this person and found support to extend the dinasty. However, wrong Tsar, wrong time... it was the trend to overthrow poor performing dinasties. And the book opens eyes to a more serious scope from the political stand point. Personal and social issues were well addressed.
